Guide Off the Edge of the Map

Lv 180–205 · both worlds · Quill, Leafre · 5 chapters · optional

Quill is the old chartkeeper in Leafre, on the lower street between the Weapon Store and the market. He has kept Maren Varn's compass pointed at the same wall for sixty years, and today it turned. Maren was the last of the Wayfinders, and she walked off the edge of the map. This questline follows her to the Margin, where Meridian measures everything that comes near the line.

Quill Maren Varn

The level cap is 250 for everyone, so this questline is optional. It pays a lot of EXP, mesos and the Edgewalker medal. Chapters 1 to 4 are Quill's; the Five Measures belong to Meridian and Maren at the Margin.

Lost the compass or the journal in the middle of a chapter? Talk to Quill and he hands you a new one (you can only hold one at a time).

The Margin, where the Five Measures take place.

1 · The Compass That Points Nowhere

Lv 180 · Quill, Leafre

  • Wayfinder's Compass Quill gives you the Wayfinder's Compass. Keep it: chapters 2 and 3 need it too.
  • The compass only stirs in Leafre. Double-click it there and a Waymark appears for you alone: "The needle swings toward a place she once stood."
    Waymark
  • Walk to the Waymark and click it from within about 150 px. It tells you a memory of Maren, and the next Waymark appears on its own.
  • There are five stops across Leafre: roughly the far west down low, the west up high, the middle down low, the east up high, and the far east at the top.
  • When the needle says "The needle stopped for good. Go and tell Quill.", talk to Quill.

Reward: 86,747,136 EXP (25% of a level 180 bar, the same in both worlds) · 5,000,000 mesos

2 · Pages in the Wind

Lv 185 · Quill

  • Maren's Journal Quill gives you Maren's Journal (the binding) and a riddle. Each riddle names a town.
  • Loose Journal Page Go to that town and use the compass. A Loose Journal Page drifts down next to you (only you can see it) and Maren's words appear. Pick it up.
  • Talk to Quill for the next riddle; the compass also repeats it anywhere outside the right town. The pages come in order, and the compass only answers in the town of the next page.

Answers

  1. "Where the snow never melts and heroes come to take their third step." El Nath
  2. "Where a town grew around an oasis and travellers arrive by genie." Ariant
  3. "Where a toy town stands on two towers and a great clock keeps the time." Ludibrium
  4. "At the very bottom of the Orbis Tower, where the town is underwater and a dolphin is the taxi." Aquarium
  5. "Where pandas train to become sages in the fog, and a crane carries travellers in." Mu Lung

Each page has one word in capitals: WALK, UNTIL, THE, LINE, MOVES. With all five pages, Quill asks what she wrote.

Type: walk until the line moves
Case, spaces and punctuation don't matter.

Reward: 125,374,212 EXP (27% of a level 185 bar) · 6,000,000 mesos
The five pages are taken.

3 · The Borrowed Shapes

Lv 190 · Quill

  • Go to a hunting ground with monsters of level 150 or higher (not a town, a boss map or an instance) and use the compass. It only borrows monsters that can actually be hurt, so event obstacles are skipped.
  • The nearest normal monster of level 150+ shows what it really is: a borrowed shape with the same look and 20 times the HP. It says "...not what I seem."
  • Unwritten Ink You have 60 seconds to kill it, and it has to be your own kill. It drops one Unwritten Ink, for you only. If it slips away, try again. After an unmasking, the compass rests for 30 seconds.
  • Bring 3 Unwritten Ink to Quill.

Good spots: Time Lane: Road of Regrets 1 to 5 (Qualm Monks and Guardians, Lv 151–157), Time Lane: Road to Oblivion 1 to 5 (Lv 160–166), and Leafre's Dragon Nest Left Behind (Skelosaurus, Lv 153).

Reward: 186,421,086 EXP (30% of a level 190 bar; Chaos 186,421,092) · 7,000,000 mesos
The three inks are taken.

4 · The Last Voyage

Lv 195 · Quill takes you out on his skiff

The Unwritten Sea
The Unwritten Sea.

  • You sail to the Unwritten Sea, a private deck with a 4-minute clock.
  • Borrowed shapes climb over the rail in three waves: 6, then 6, then 8. They wear the shapes of old beginner monsters: Slimes, Jr. Neckis, Stirges, Ribbon Pigs, Trixters and Green Trixters, each with 930,000 HP.
  • After the third wave comes the biggest shape: a King Block Golem with 60,000,000 HP.
  • Clear every wave and the Golem before the clock ends. Monsters here give no EXP or drops. Then you land at the Margin: talk to Meridian to finish the chapter. Maren is there too.
  • If the clock runs out or you die, you're back in Leafre. Talk to Quill ("Cast off?") to try again. Later, his skiff can take you straight back to the Margin ("Back out to the Margin?").

It's a damage race: about 78.6 million HP in 4 minutes. The shapes barely hurt, so bring your strongest multi-target and bossing skills. Dying here costs nothing: no Chaos life and no EXP.

Reward: 274,420,812 EXP (33% of a level 195 bar) · 8,000,000 mesos

5 · The Five Measures

Lv 200 · Meridian and Maren, the Margin

Meridian

  • Meridian keeps four Measures, and Maren keeps the last. Take Meridian's four in any order: pick one from its menu, and it tells you the rules and asks if you're ready. Heart (Maren) comes last.
  • Failing a Measure costs nothing but the try, and there's no limit on retries.
  • The Measure rooms are private copies of the Margin. You can't change channel or open the Cash Shop inside. Any portal takes you back to the Margin, and dying fails the room. Dying in a room costs nothing: no Chaos life and no EXP. (A death out on the Margin itself costs the usual EXP.)

Measure of Distance (90 seconds)

Meridian's five marks appear one at a time along the floor. Touch each in order by clicking it from within about 150 px.

Order: 1 far east · 2 far west · 3 east · 4 west · 5 just east of the middle
A sprint back and forth.

Measure of Memory (8 statements)

Meridian says a statement over its head, and you have 10 seconds. Stand left of Meridian for true and right for false; where you stand when the 10 seconds end is your answer. You can miss two; the third miss sends you back. The 8 statements are drawn from these 16:

Statement Answer
Quill waited sixty years for the compass to turn. TRUE (left)
Maren Varn was the first of the Wayfinders. FALSE (right)
The Unwritten borrows the shapes of things you have already fought. TRUE (left)
Maren's first map, carved on a rock in Leafre, was perfect. FALSE (right)
Meridian measures everything that comes near the line. TRUE (left)
The Unwritten stole the pages of Maren's journal. FALSE (right)
El Nath is a snowy mountain town in Ossyria. TRUE (left)
Henesys is the thieves' hometown. FALSE (right)
Kerning City has a subway under it. TRUE (left)
Perion is the magicians' hometown. FALSE (right)
Zakum waits deep inside El Nath's Dead Mine. TRUE (left)
Mu Lung is famous for its snowmen. FALSE (right)
Ludibrium is a town made of toys. TRUE (left)
Orbis and El Nath are both on Victoria Island. FALSE (right)
Horntail waits in the Cave of Life near Leafre. TRUE (left)
Magatia is a snowy town of ice mages. FALSE (right)

Measure of Wit (Omok against Meridian)

  • The normal Omok window opens. You play black and go first. Exactly five in a row wins; six or more doesn't count. You can't make a double three (two open threes at once) unless that move makes five.
  • Win one game to pass. If you lose, another game is set up. If your move clock runs out, the turn passes to Meridian.

Meridian always completes its own five and always blocks yours, but now and then it takes a weaker spot. A fork beats it: set up a four and a three at the same time (a four-three), so it can only block one.

Measure of Strength (5 minutes)

The same fight as the Last Voyage, in a Measure room: three waves of borrowed shapes (6, 6, 8) at 930,000 HP each, then the King Block Golem with 60,000,000 HP. Clear them all before the clock ends.

Measure of Heart (Maren, after the other four)

Talk to Maren on the Margin. She asks, "Will you take the last step with me?"

Answer: any of the three works: Take her hand, Go first, or Let her go first. A short scene plays, and the questline is done.

Reward: each Measure pays one level's worth of EXP, priced at levels 200 to 204: 1,190,000,000 · 1,199,520,000 · 1,209,116,160 · 1,218,789,089 · 1,228,539,402. It's the same in both worlds and not affected by the EXP rate, so all five take a level 200 character to level 205. At level 250 a Measure still counts but pays no EXP.

When you finish, your world hears "<name> walked off the edge of the map!" and you get the Edgewalker medal. It's untradeable, and you can only have one.

Edgewalker medal Edgewalker
Edgewalker: STR, DEX, INT and LUK +35, Max HP and MP +1,000, ATT and M.ATT +18, boss damage +12%, ignore DEF +6%, EXP from monsters +15%.
